Nutrition 101 - The Power Of Fiber ( 24/11/1386 )
Can we talk candidly about fiber? Fiber is one of the most effective, yet underutilized dietary tools in our society. Many foods at the store or restaurant are “white”: white bread, cakes and pastries, pasta, white rice, potato chips and other junk food, pizza and other convenience foods, etc. Let’s face it – white food tastes good. Add some high fructose corn syrup and it tastes really good!
These foods typically are made from refined carbohydrate, where virtually all of the fiber has been removed. Carbohydrates themselves are NOT the enemy! Gram for gram, complex carbs (containing soluble and insoluble fiber) contribute far fewer calories than dietary fats. Also, glucose from complex carbs is less likely to be converted to fat than sucrose from refined foods and sugar. Therefore, don’t just count calories. It’s the QUALITY of calories that count!
